'Spraying for the beauty: Pesticide use for visual appearance in apple production' ICYMI: New AECP paper in Agricultural Economics led by Lucca Zachmann with Chloe McCallum Apple growers often use pesticides for visual quality (only) and this behavior is largely driven by marketing channels. Findings sweet-spots along value chains to reduce pesticide use focused on visual quality could be an efficient strategy to reduce pesticide use risks, without without compromising food security. Are you fascinated by possible alternative pathways to artificial (general) intelligence, such as building artificial systems that take inspiration from biological organisms?  If so, you might want to check out this paper/survey on “Mortal Computation: A Foundation for Biomimetic Intelligence” by my advisor Dr. Alexander Ororbia II and the renowned neuroscientist Dr. Karl Friston. This survey proposes a new theoretical and conceptual framework for designing and understanding biomimetic systems, based on what the authors call the mortal computation thesis. “Mortal computation”, a phrase introduced by none other than Geoffrey Hinton near the end of 2022, is the idea that the software and hardware of a system are fundamentally inseparable and that the system’s behavior is driven by the primal goal of survival or, put in another way, persisting in a changing environment. The paper reviews and analyzes ideas from biophysics, cybernetics, and cognitive science to build a framework for and more concrete definition of mortal computation, using the mathematical and conceptual tools provided by the free energy principle, the Markov blanket formalism, as well as the foundations of morphology. The paper also discusses the implications and applications of mortal computation for artificial general intelligence, neuromorphic computing, and neurorobotics. Here are some key points from the paper: Mortal computation versus. immortal computation: Mortal computation is argued to be more thermodynamically and statistically efficient than immortal computation, which itself assumes a separation between software and hardware. More importantly, mortal computation also embraces the notions of embodiment, enactivism, and autopoiesis, which, taken together, emphasize the role of the physical makeup, the environment, and the self-organization and self-reproduction of the living entity. Mortal inference, learning, and selection: Mortal computation can be seen as a process of minimizing (variational) free energy, which is a measure of the total discrepancy between the system’s internal (generative) model of its world and the external, physical reality that it resides in. This backbone of this process boils down to a form of interdependent inference, learning, and selection –as the authors state, inference is the updating of the organism's beliefs based on sensory data, learning is the updating of the organism’s parameters based on inference, and selection is the updating of the organism’s structure based on learning.
