Smooth hydrangeas, bloom on new wood and can be pruned anytime between full dormancy, which is after it’s consistently under 32° at night, all the way through early spring. Mophead hydrangeas bloom on old wood. They produce their buds in late summer early fall. Those buds will then become the next year‘s blooms.
