GamutRIA is a groundbreaking project that fuses tradition, innovation, and humor into a singular musical expression. Its name—formed from Gamelan + Mulut + Ceria—translates to “Joyful Gamut.” At its core lies Gamelan Mulut (“mouth gamelan”), a vocal style that imitates the shimmering interlocking patterns and percussive timbres of Balinese gamelan. With only the human voice and the support of looping technology, GamutRIA recreates the rich textures of instruments such as the gangsa, kendang, cengceng, and gong.

This collection features a blend of original compositions by Ciaaattt and traditional Balinese works reimagined in the gamut style. Many of its pieces were shaped during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time of hardship that also sparked renewed energy and innovation. Ciaaattt’s characters, Bli Gamut and Man Kenyung, bring humor, warmth, and social reflection, adding theatrical depth to the music.

From Bali to Europe, Japan to the United States, Ciaaattt with his project GamutRIA has reached audiences worldwide. It represents both a deeply personal artistic journey and a living bridge between tradition and contemporary experimentation—inviting listeners into a joyful reimagining of gamelan that feels at once familiar and refreshingly new.

About Ciaaattt:

Ciaaattt is an artist from Bali, Indonesia, whose practice spans music, dance, acting, theater, and both traditional and contemporary dance drama. He currently directs several ensembles at Sanggar Qakdanjur—a gamelan and dance studio founded in honor of his grandfather—including a children’s flute ensemble and a women’s gong kebyar group.

He lived and worked in Europe for 22 years, teaching music and fostering collaborations between Balinese culture and diverse institutions. His work included projects with Puspa Warna and SJI in France; Saling Asah, Pairi Daiza, Musical Instrument Museum, and Selene’s Garden in Belgium; Rumah Budaya Berlin and Bali Puspa in Cologne, Germany; Penempaan Guntur in Spain; and Tongtong Festival, University of Amsterdam, and Banjar Suka Duka in the Netherlands.

Since 2020, Ciaaattt has pursued a solo career, presenting his multidisciplinary act at numerous festivals, including the Virtual Bali Festival, Toraja International Festival, Sacred Bridge Festival, Lokaswara Festival, Denpasar Young Creative, Suara Festival, Denpasar Festival, and Amazing Indonesia TVRI. He has also undertaken international tours in Europe and Japan in 2023, and the United States in 2024.
