A cabriolet motor vehicle has fixed sides or cant rails and a folding top that remains part of the vehicle.
More expensive cabriolets have folding cant rails, heavy longitudinal beams which are supported by hood irons while raised or lowered. The hood irons, shaped like an elongated S, are displayed at the back of the roof. The elongated S shape resembles the hind leg of a leaping goat—see Capriole—giving the name for this type of carriage or automobile body.
More recently the name has been loosely applied to simple convertibles
