Steam engines where the operating pressure (or reduced pressure) is only applied to one side of the piston.

Early examples of these were Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric beam engine, then later the Cornish cycle engine.

Late examples were very different: high-speed steam engine where multiple single-acting cylinders were used so as to keep the crankcase and its closed lubrication system separate.
