Thanks for uploading File:Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica crop from 1929 Title and Trust map.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

Hello! I see you're taking photos of the westside of the Los Angeles area. Do you do photograph requests for that region? If so, I have some ideas for photos for the Bel-Air, Westwood, Brentwood, etc. areas.

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 05:14, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WhisperToMe (talk) 21:36, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! I've started adding the photos to respective school district and/or LA neighborhood articles! As for going towards the south and the center, I listed Manhattan Beach and some Redondo Beach schools. Would the Palos Verdes Peninsula be too far? WhisperToMe (talk) 04:47, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WhisperToMe yes. LOL. Let me do a few loops of underphotographed public institutions in WLA first and then I'll see what would be other good territory. Jengod (talk) 05:13, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Roger that! WhisperToMe (talk) 05:21, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question: Do you need more time to do some of these requests, or is it OK if I add a few more entries? WhisperToMe (talk) 04:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Add away @WhisperToMe! It's really just what I can kinda get to while I'm already somewhere. I very rarely have the bandwidth for a special outing but sometimes in the mood for a drive to wherever. Jengod (talk) 05:16, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good! I added a few places in Lomita (including a Japanese school) and may add more in other places soon WhisperToMe (talk) 05:37, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Did some POWs come home Reds? Saturday Evening Post 1954.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Backyard Wildlife Habitat

[edit]

I just cleaned up the sources on w:Backyard Wildlife Habitat and noticed your image. It looks fine on desktop, but on mobile it appears too small due to the overall size. I'm wondering if it would render better if you chopped it in half and displayed it as two separate images. Viriditas (talk) 09:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up Viriditas - I'll fuss with it later and see about chopping it down (or just manipulate it as you see fit. I don't mind!) Jengod (talk) 16:58, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I just took a second look on mobile. It’s probably fine, so I wouldn’t want you to do anything that would steal too much of your time. I think my initial complaint was that it seemed more fuzzy and out of focus on mobile than on desktop. Also, there’s no way to identify the species in the image. Maybe I’m just being too critical, so perhaps it is best to ignore me. Thanks for the image. Viriditas (talk) 19:21, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I’m a bit slow. I only just realized that your image is 928 KB, which probably explains the problem. Any chance you can upload a larger, more hi-res version? Viriditas (talk) 08:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just going to remove it from the page! I was just trying to broadly demonstrate that it's possible to cultivate a lot of diversity in a small space but there's probably a better way to do that! Cheers. Jengod (talk) 07:24, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, I kind of like that image. Maybe you can still keep it in there? I apologize if you thought I was saying I didn't like it, because I really do. I vote to keep it still. Viriditas (talk) 07:59, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your uploads.

Could you please provide more specific sources on where you're getting your images? Sources like "JSTOR", "archive.org" and "newspaper" are not specific enough for anyone to trace backwards. I would kindly request that you look into fixing the images you've uploaded.

Also, FYI, Commons doesn't accept cc-by-nc-sa images, which is how this photo is marked.

Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:33, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! @Magog the Ogre It's funny they changed the upload layout (on mobile at least which is the only thing I can use) and made it really small so I presumed they wanted less information. Sometimes I felt like I was just repetitively stating the same thing too much and pointlessly. But I will go back to oversharing! Sorry about Jabez B. Blanding. I was so excited someone tagged it CC-by but I guess it was the wrong kind. Jengod (talk) 16:14, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. If you can prove the image is sufficiently old, it might fall under COM:ART. But I couldn't find anything about the original author or publication. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:11, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Magog the Ogre It's the first and only time I've seen a CC license on a findagrave photo! I might email the museum and see if they'd consider uploading a photo. Also while looking for the URL for one map I found another May 1862 civil war map in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Im not fast enough on ACW stuff to know what it's about (Virginia area naval battles?) so it's just under Category:Maps of the American Civil War for now. Category discussion warning

Andrew Johnson and slavery has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 17:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jen, I've added the category "Geothermal maps" to all the maps you uploaded. They will be easy to find that way (altho I also downloaded them all to my laptop to have portability. Wowzers! you are cool. This really made my day. Netherzone (talk) 21:31, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Broichmore I think roughly 1917 to 1918. See the article. He was probably a mildly notable nightclub promoter/restauranteur in his own right although I haven't done a deep deep dive but I optimistically redlinked him. Jengod (talk) 03:28, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cabrillo, the Ship Cafe, was modeled on a Spanish galleon, replicating the San Salvador in 1905. The building was designed by architects Norman Marsh and Clarence Russell It was first run by Carlo Marchetti. Baron Long bought it in 1917, in partnership with Julius Rosenfield. The Ship Cafe was destroyed in a fire in December 1920. It was rebuilt, this time with two masts instead of three, and lying parallel to the shore instead of pointing out to sea. Baron Long abandoned his interests in the place after the fire. See reference.
What about Ward McFadden? Broichmore (talk) 09:14, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
