DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Tranquil Mist

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
The owners are a retired couple. As their life experience becomes abundant, they have different thinking about the positioning of their home. The designer used natural and fluid elements, such as curves, to create an atmosphere of slowness and simplicity. Many curved walls serve as a medium for sight. The project emphasizes circulation and layout adjustments to meet the lifestyle and schedule of the elderly, ensuring comfort and functionality.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The designer installed plaster lamps to complement the ceiling's curves. These stalactite-like fixtures break from traditional formats, creating a seamless visual flow. Curves are thoughtfully integrated into the walls and ceilings in balanced proportions. Combined with recessed lighting, they enhance natural brightness and create a boundary-free effect. The expanded view mirrors the lush greenery outside. Horizontally and vertically extending curves subtly modify ceiling beams, minimizing height differences and ensuring smooth spatial transitions.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The residents are highly satisfied with the remodeled space. They particularly appreciate the circulation plan and the fact that the double master bedroom gives them more freedom to choose between open and isolated private areas without interfering with each other. At 70 years old, they are at the age of free choice. They dare to pursue and express what they want. The cozy color scheme and quiet living space are both beautiful and practical, allowing them to start their retirement life.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in March 2024 in Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Materials: Mamo stone, braided carpet, curved molding boards, crossroad bricks, glass tiles, environmentally friendly water-based latex paint, rattan weaving, tiles, KD panels. The color scheme is pure. Low saturation blues with gray and white create neutrality and comfort. The pastel color scheme is designed to satisfy the elderly's desire for aesthetic sophistication. Avoiding overly bright or eye-catching colors ensures that the entire space looks and feels relaxing.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The site is a 92.5 square meters new apartment. It was originally four rooms. The space is fully adjusted except for the toilet and kitchen which are fixed in position. In terms of circulation planning, key changes include the double master bedroom. The designer utilized closets to create a loop-like circulation to separate the sleeping areas. The two seniors can choose to open or separate their private spaces as needed to support their independent and uninterrupted lifestyles. The 'master bedroom with separate beds' is a perfect fit for the couple's lifestyle.

TAGS:
Retirement, new apartment, accessible space, open plan, dual master bedrooms, light tone, rounded, clouds and mists in the mountains.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project, 'Tranquil Mist,' is designed to create a tranquil and healing atmosphere, much like distant mountains. Designed for a retired couple, the space incorporates curves and smooth lines to soften sharp edges, symbolizing harmony and continuity in life. These fluid shapes resemble clouds and waves, casting dynamic light and shadows that echo the natural landscape outside. The design fosters a deep connection with nature, offering a serene retreat where the couple can embrace the peaceful rhythm of retirement.

CHALLENGE:
The main difficulty was to achieve a balance between functionality and aesthetics within the limited space. The original layout was a four-room, which needed to be drastically reorganized to adapt to the living needs of the occupants. In particular, the fixed location of the toilet and kitchen restricted the adjustment of other areas. The designer referred to the example of Japanese senior housing to create the most flexible layout. In addition, sufficient open space to achieve good lighting and ventilation, which posed an additional challenge in terms of circulation and planning.
