What is unique about pre-60's Links is the bell metal. The composition of the brass, with a gold plating over silver plating, is that it was unique to the era and can never be reproduced, despite efforts over the past 50 years to get close. Stuff that went in to that brass just isn't made, and in some cases may not even be legal anymore. So that sound just cannot be obtained unless a player goes vintage, which is what a lot of players do, not only in the horn, but in the mouthpiece.

Brilhart Tonalin Tenor sax mouthpiece 1960's
Brilhart Tonalin Tenor sax mouthpiece 1960's. The great Stan Getz played this mouthpice, in about the same tip opening, during the mid 1950's. It is a beautiful, warm, mellow sounding piece that projects well and has loads of power in reserve.
Engraving still perfectly intact on the early 50's Otto Link NY Tone Master.
Otto Link NY Tone Master, early 1950's, with ligature on.
Otto Link engraved on the ligature screw - only done on early New York made Tone Master mouthpieces.
The late, great Freddie Gregory opened the tip to about a 6* opening and scooped the side walls, adding a slight roll over to the baffle. The original 4* facing was typical of the era - Otto Link did not make larger facings until much later. This vintage has a very long facing, Freddie opened it and gave it projection and power - it is darker than 1960's Links, and just roars with power and a deep, colorful, warm tone.
