Having an island in our kitchen was the dream, but the pressure of ‘getting it right’ made it so hard to make a final decision on the layout. My instinct was to go as big as possible, but actually I think islands can be too big and easily become a bit of a dumping ground.

There’s definitely a fine line between balancing function and aesthetic, and I think ours works well and is probably more weighted towards the functional elements. I absolutely love having the sink, double bin and dishwasher housed in ours as I can get on with things in the kitchen while still being sociable.

Anyway, I’m not an island planning expert but hopefully this is food for thought for those planning!

By far my favorite room in our home! So much thought went into designing this space. Converting an original 1925 kitchen into a modern, useable kitchen was a task!

All new plumbing and electrical had to be installed, the natural gas line for the range had to be moved and custom designing the cabinets for functionality were a must!

We designed the peninsula to wrap around the wall to create a small coffee bar area. This clever use of space didn’t cost much but the impact was huge. Guests can enjoy a nice cup of coffee without having to step into the kitchen!

A lot of people ask why we didn’t put in an island because the kitchen is so large and open. I didn’t want a permanent island.
