The most important moment in the evolution of life
Even though limited to a relatively simple cell, bacteria are impressive survival machines. They colonize every possible habitat, from miles-high clouds to the deep ocean. They have a dazzling array of biological tricks that allow them to cause diseases, eat crude oil, conduct electric currents, draw power from the Sun, and communicate with each other.
This is a class project we did to learn about the plasma membrane and its parts. The phospholipids were made of a balloon, two straws and masking tape to hold the tails onto the balloon. They were tied together on fishing string, glued together with rubber cement, then hung from the ceiling. The other parts were cut from heavy paper.
