3.1K views · 167 reactions | Have you varied the shapes of your “D” shape chicken doodles yet? As I was falling asleep a couple of nights ago I had a vision of drawing them as triangles instead. I like it and it’s a fun new style to play with. I am often asked if the background should be painted before or after. It is a difficult question to answer because it really comes down to personal preference. There might be times when an artist might prefer to see the first layers of watercolor through the layers painted on top. And there may be other times when we want that rough white edge isolating the subject over the background. It’s not an easy thing to answer. For me, it probably comes down to whether I have planned the painting or not. If I am in the middle of an impromptu play session, I may paint the subject first, and then create the background as an afterthought. If I have planned a painting, and I know what the background will be, and I know how those colors will layer with my subject, I may paint the background before. There is no one right way to do it. I hope you will feel encouraged to open your sketchbook to play and experiment and make that choice for yourself. Try it both ways and see which style suits you.
