Magdalene Odundo, Untitled, 1995. We bought this out of an exhibition that we hosted here. This was a collaborative purchase between me and the African art curator--for me, Magdalene is an English potter. But also an African artist. This is coiled--and to watch a video of Magdalene making a pot is to watch poetry in motion. It combines traditions of African, Native American and ancient Greek pottery.

Magdalene Odundo remembers a-n’s role in “helping to dispel the distinction made between art and craft in the use of clay” during the 1980s.
