Following the murder of Mary Ann Nichols, Abberline was placed in charge of the various detectives investigating the Ripper murders. Chief Inspector Walter Dew, knew Abberline and, while describing him as sounding and looking like a bank manager, also stated that his knowledge of the area made him one of the most important members of the Whitechapel murder investigation team.
The Investigation
Detective Abberline joined the Metropolitan Police in 1863 and first worked in H Division (Whitechapel) as a Local Inspector in 1878. He was promoted to First Class in 1887 while working in Whitehall. At the time of the Ripper murders, Abberline was transferred back to Whitechapel to work on the investigation, due to his familiarity with the neighborhood.
