Eleanor Beatrice Townsend (1870–1884) was the sixth of seven children born to John Joseph Townsend, a New York attorney and politician, and his wife, Catherine Rebecca Bronson Townsend, a friend of John Singer Sargent’s and the subject of her own portrait by the artist.Portraits of children are among Sargent’s earliest works and remain some of his most captivating paintings. Rather than idealized images of childhood, the artist’s lively likenesses serve as character studies of his young sitters. The presence of a favorite toy or pet, such as the small terrier Beatrice clutches to her side, serves to emphasize the sitter’s individual personality. As one art historian noted, “Sargent’s sensitivity to the complexities, intensities, and uncertainties of adolescence, especially of females, is a marked feature of his portraiture.” Here, Sargent captures the confidence and self-possession of his young subject as she meets the viewer’s gaze head-on. Sadly, only two years after this painting was completed, Beatrice died of peritonitis at age fourteen.

I have painted this lovely square in the historic centre of Granada several times and all the originals have been bought by collectors. I have always painted it looking the opposite way to feature the Cathedral tower and with the light behind me and from what I have seen of other paintings this is the standard, popular aspect. Here though I am looking away from the Cathedral to the bottom of the square and into the light. What attracted me, apart from the beautiful buildings and autumn colors, was the interesting shadows cast by the low November sun which added interest to the composition. The medium is watercolourThe image size is 350mm x 250mm.The original is for sale for 220 euros.

In the muted palette of the emerging dawn, Claude Monet portrayed the industrial port of Le Havre on the northern coast of France. The brilliant orange of the rising sun glimmers amid the damp air and dances on the gentle rippling water, lighting up its iridescent blues and greens. Barely discernible through a cool haze, pack boats on the left billow smoke from their stacks. Painted during the spring of 1873 as the country struggled to rebuild following the Franco-Prussian war, this Sunrise might also metaphorically suggest a new day dawning in France.Sunrise exemplifies Monet's plein air, or "outdoor," approach to painting. The informal and spontaneous brushstrokes establish this picture as one of the first works, along with the famous Impression: Sunrise at the Marmottan Museum in Paris, in the Impressionist style that was to make him famous. The ephemeral play of light, water, and air would remain Monet's subject for the rest of his career.

Medium:Oil on canvasDimensions:Canvas: 53.2 x 34.4 cmFramed: 73 x 54.6 x 6.4 cmEl Greco depicts here an imagined scene featuring the Virgin Mary, Christ, Saint Joseph, Saint Anne and John the Baptist. It has been suggested that this depiction of Christ - being, as he is, in a deep sleep on his mother’s lap - is reminiscent of the pietà: a traditional scene in which Mary holds Christ’s body following the Crucifixion. If so, the image can be seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus’s eventual death.(Text: Emily Wilkinson)[link=https://sites.google.com/site/elmondelart/the-holy-family-by-el-greco](Source)[/link]
