These are fundamental concepts needed to make the perfect cut. DAY/DEM has distilled this essence of craftsmanship, honing their distinctive electro-forward sound and identity through a steady flow of single releases and kinetic DJ sets, captivating audiences across North America.
Now enters “Current State EP” — an escapade of dance and improvised expression that encapsulates a journey of ambience, growth and connection. Released via Florida-based CD label Compost Discs, the EP features five tracks on CD and four on digital platforms, marking their debut project release.
Listeners are first introduced to “Love U,” an outright spellbinding track that pulls you into DAY/DEM’s intimate and lush world. On it, sheathes of cosmic synths flow over canvases of varied percussion, laced with hints of acid and distorted vocals. “Current State” follows up with another serving of acid, resonant, whirling arpeggios and a dynamic groove that exhibits minimalism and rhythmic joy. “Love U (Esteban Mix)” takes the intimacy of the former to hyperdrive, where the BPM is maximized for wall-to-wall exuberance. The more you listen, the more pockets of minimal flavors reveal themselves with techno as the driving force.
“Sublevel Communication” takes you twenty-two thousand leagues under the sea. This is where translucent beings make first contact. The EP’s CD exclusive track “Land” paints the ambient and dub influences crystal clear with dark textures and spacious pads. Self refinery and exploration is the name of the game for this release — well primed for any selector with a keen ear.
“The motif that is consistent throughout this release is the saw. While saws typically represent cutting off or destroying something, I see them in a different light. I think when things are cut down to their most basic and raw form, it creates space for authenticity and beauty to grow.” -DAY/DEM
