History of the holiday
This day is dedicated to the memory of Zumbi dos Palmares, the leader of African slave resistance in Brazil, who fought for the freedom and rights of Afro-Brazilians in the 17th century. The holiday was officially established in 2011, although cultural events and public activities dedicated to this day were held earlier.
