Rain Garden Plants

Rain garden plants love keeping their roots wet, but unlike bog plants, can tolerate dry periods. They are great to plant around gutters and rain chains, edges of streams and ponds, sunny ditches and other wet areas in the garden. They can reduce the amount of fertilizer and other chemicals that run off of your property, which protects rivers, streams and your drinking water supply, and other sensitive ecosystems.

Bletilla striata 'White Pearl' is a very fast-multiplying clone with 28" tall stalks of pleated green leaves topped, starting in mid-April (NC), with 30" stalks of small, pure-white orchid flowers. Moist, rich, organic soils and plenty of light grow some amazing specimens. Expect well-grown plants to make a 3' wide patch in five years. Zones: 6a to 9b
Bletilla ochracea 'Oriental Gold' Hardy Ground Orchid Rain Garden Plants White Flowers
Bletilla ochracea 'Oriental Gold' is an incredible selection of the normally yellow-flowered hardy Asian ground orchid, shared by plantsman Alan Galloway. Starting in late May (NC), the clumps are topped with 3' tall spikes of near white flowers, highlighted by a dark yellow lip, flecked in maroon...heaviest toward the throat. For us, Bletilla 'Oriental Gold' flowers well into early August when other bletillas have long since slowed. We have found Bletilla ochracea to grow well in half day sun. Zones: 7a to 9b.
Bletilla 'Weaver's Pink' Hardy Ground Orchid Rain Garden Spring Flowers Shade Perennial
Bletilla 'Weaver's Pink', a plant we received years ago from We-Du Nursery co-founder, Dick Weaver, has performed exceptionally in our trials. The 3-4 way branched stalks are topped with lovely creamy white flowers, that open from lavender buds. Each flower is further highlighted by lavender petal exteriors and a light yellow ruffled throat, highlighted by magenta flecks. A mass of Bletilla 'Weaver's Pink' is stunning in the summer garden. Canna flaccida Golden Canna Lily Rain Garden Yellow Flowers Summer Perennial

Canna flaccida looks like a typical canna lily, with 4' tall stalks of green leaves, topped with clusters of bright, butter-yellow flowers from late spring until fall. While moist soils are preferred, they certainly aren't necessary for Canna flaccida to succeed. Zones: 8a to 10b, at least
