‘Chief of War’
Apple TV+’s new drama series Chief of War is also star, EP, and co-creator Jason Momoa’s lifelong passion project. Set in 18th century Hawaii, the series looks at the fight to unite the divided islands under one chief in the years leading up to Western Europe’s inevitable colonization of the land. Momoa stars as Ka‘iana, a bold warrior who is literally introduced wrangling a shark with his barehands. Ka’iana finds himself torn between the bloody ambitions of chieftains like Kahekili and his desire to protect the people. Like FX’s hit Shogun, Chief of War fully immerses modern audiences in a violent world of political power grabs and human passion. Also like that show, it trusts modern American audiences to follow subtitled dialogue. Chief of War is a gnarly watch, full of blood and butts, guts and glory.
