‘Happy Face’
I am always in when it comes to a good “based on a true story” crime thriller, and so far, Paramount+’s new series Happy Face is doing it for me. The show stars Annaleigh Ashford as Melissa Moore, the daughter of a famous serial killer who was known for leaving a happy face marking at the spots where his murders were committed. Playing the father is Dennis Quaid, who makes criminally insane look a little too easy for my own comfort. What I like about it so far is that while other takes may focus the story squarely on the Happy Face murderer, this series centers itself around Melissa grappling with her father’s actions and her attempt to do right in the world. And while Quaid might make demented look like a cakewalk, Ashford plays tormented like it’s no one’s business.
