‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Spike Lee’s latest joint, Highest 2 Lowest—based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller—is aptly titled. The first half of the movie, which is now streaming on Apple TV+, feels like a low for Lee—cheesy, over-the-top drama accompanied by a distracting, incongruous score. But then, about half-way through, the film takes a turn to the “highest.” Lee captures a modern-day New York with energy and reverence, including one of the best NYC subway action scenes every captured on film. Washington and ASAP Rocky eat up the screen, and the new banger from ASAP will have you bumping in your seat. In my humble opinion, the highs are worth the lows.
