‘The Old Guard’

It brings me no joy to report that the long-awaited Old Guard sequel, The Old Guard 2, was a total let-down. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it for my “What to Watch” this week. However, in preparation for The Old Guard 2 release on Netflix last week, I did rewatch the first Old Guard movie from 2020. That, I can wholeheartedly recommend. Compared to the new film, you’ll doubly appreciate director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s down-to-earth, practical approach to storytelling and action. You’ll relish the compelling, straight-forward, not overly-convoluted plot. And you’ll cherish the emotional, tender interpersonal relationships that drive the story, rather than the other way around. Truly, what a great film.
