‘Weapons’
Zach Cregger’s new film Weapons starts off as an unsettling psychological horror film, but soon reveals itself to be a mad Grimm’s Fairy Tale set in suburban Pennsylvania. The film opens weeks after almost an entire classroom of third graders run away from home in the middle of the night at the same time. Suspicion naturally falls on the kids’ school teacher, a single woman and alcoholic with a history of getting too involved with her students. However, as we learn more about Miss Gandy (Julia Garner), furious father Archer (Josh Brolin), local cop Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), sweet principal Marcus (Benedict Wong) and more of the folks affected by this mystery, it soon becomes evident that all is not well with the one boy who didn’t run away, Alex (Cary Christopher). The second half of Weapons is full of darkly comic reveals and a brilliant performance from Amy Madigan as twisted villainess Aunt Gladys.
