Bij de naam De Fabriek komen automatisch twee zaken bij mij boven: Zwolle en The Residents. Toen dit het gezelschap in 1977 voor het eerst van zich liet horen bestond internet niet. In die tijd liet De Fabriek op al hun uitgaven hun adres in Zwolle achter. Eerst was dat de Van der Laenstraat maar vrij snel werd dat de Molenweg en nog later de Heemskerckstraat. Na al die tijd is hun hoofdzetel nog steeds in Zwolle. The Residents zijn de geheimzinnige act uit San Francisco die het experiment niet schuwen en waarvan niemand weet wie het zijn.

Beides gilt auch für De Fabriek, das am besten als ein Kollektiv beschrieben werden kann. Bei jeder Veröffentlichung werden die beteiligten Musiker ordentlich aufgelistet, aber ob sie alle auch wirklich existieren, ist nicht immer klar. Auf De Fabriek-Produkten gibt es nie Fotos von einzelnen Personen. Auf seltenen Pressefotos sind meistens nur zwei oder drei Männer zu sehen, die immer Masken tragen. Im Laufe der Zeit ist die Identität einiger Kernmitglieder deutlich klarer geworden. Richard Van Dellen leitet seit 1977 das Hauptquartier in Zwolle und ist unter anderem für Kommunikation und Werbung verantwortlich. Das andere Büro wird seit mehreren Jahren von Martijn Hohmann aus Breda verwaltet, der unter anderem für das Design verantwortlich ist. Darüber hinaus gibt es immer andere, verschiedene Musiker und Künstler, die sich als Mitarbeiter bei De Fabriek anschließen.

For their first CD release of 2025, De Fabriek plunges itself into the music of its German nextdoor neighbors. On Krautsalat, the Kraut theme suddenly becomes very prominent. Kraut can occasionally be heard in many of their previous productions. But this is an entire album filled with Krautrock! Made using De Fabriek’s characteristic working method: in collaboration with other musicians. The refined design is a big nod to a piece of German cultural history. Ken uw Klassiekers!

Dit project kwam tot stand, zoals zo vaak gebeurt, door toeval. Het idee ontstond in de zomer van 2024 onder het genot van een wijntje op een terras in Griekenland. We wilden iets doen met het thema Kraut. Een goede kennis bracht ons in contact met Steve Schroyder (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Temple) Steve bood aan om nog ongebruikte muziek uit 1972 van zijn toenmalige band Scarecrew te gebruiken. Daarnaast wilden we al langer iets doen met de muziek van Tonspur (Mekanik Kommando, The Use Of Ashes) die een vorm van hedendaagse Kraut maken. Door als laatste de broers Chulkov (Six dead Bulgarians) daar nog aan toe te voegen was het verhaal compleet. Zo ontstond een verassende salade.
