Sydney's fertile ground has once again yielded, and it's our pleasure to introduce Dionysus by way of their gloomy, intense debut EP "Theatre of Dionysus". While that title may sound familiar to some, Dionysus instantly blow past the usual clichéd standards set for what usually scans as "goth" or "dark punk", where songwriting is often an afterthought and singing is done without conviction. This band knows their way around a song, and have a powerhouse vocalist in Madison Scott, whose talent is split equally between outright aggression ("Blue Swan", "Silhouette"), and more ethereal cuts that recall the aloof slither of early HTRK, or more recently the excellent Eternal Dust record.
These points of comparison also hold true for Theatre of Dionysus’ immaculate production, where every instrument hits hard, while retaining a potent sense of atmosphere. And the performances are of the calibre expected from a group who have honed their talents playing in our other Urge family bands as varied and interesting as R.M.F.C, Gyrate, Optic Nerve and Concrete Lawn. "Only Theatre" serves as another commanding entry to their already compelling body of work.
