We present a study on the use of cinnabar red and Egyptian blue in pictorial assemblages found in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. We will show the results of the analyses carried out on the different pictorial samples extracted. The interpretation of the results is centred on finding out whether the cinnabar red and Egyptian blue necessarily had to have a sub-layer of another pigment and, if so, what type of colour it was and what the reasons were. For the latter question, we will obviously rely on the various theories put forward in recent years. In those cases where such a sub-layer is present, we will try to elucidate whether the pigment used in it can be considered a chronological marker. The results of the provenance of the cinnabar are also presented.
