  • Resumen
    • English has become a global lingua franca. This has led to various responses in English Language Teaching (ELT) to develop paradigms that move away from traditional views on linguistic ownership, linguacultural identity, and native-speakerism. These new models include Teaching English as an International Language, English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) , and Global English language teaching. Since 2017, the University of Málaga’s teacher training MA program has incorporated an ELF approach in its Applied Linguistics module. Due to COVID-19, the course transitioned to an online format, incorporating activities on ELF-related topics, including native-speakerism. This chapter examines how 75 pre-service teachers were exposed to and reflected on native-speakerism through video resources and digital interaction. Analysis of online forum discussions among 53 trainees revealed that most critically addressed native-speakerism, citing personal and academic evidence. Some trainees, however, upheld traditional views on linguistic correctness and cultural propriety. Interestingly, some participants related native-speakerism to teaching other languages, not just English. Over time, trainees’ lesson plans increasingly incorporated resources and activities sensitive to Teaching English as an International Language and reported an impact on their teaching practices.
