In this article we analyze the role of systematic terror in the process of the Conquest and the attitudes of the authorities regarding abuses of power. As a central case study, we focus on the process against a conqueror, the Cádiz-born captain Lázaro Fonte, an authentic psychopath responsible for a massive slaughter of Indians in Fusagasugá and the violation of several girls of short age. The importance of the process is double: first, because it contributes new information about the real magnitude of the conquering process; and second, because across the testimonies of numerous witnesses it is possible to ascertain the attitudes of contemporary Spaniards regarding such behavior.
