The European population of the Eider Somateria mollissima has notably increased its breeding urea, expanding its range towards the south and south-west of Europe. The results of a bibliographical review, an inquiry and a compilation of the author's own data reveal that in the lberian Peninsula the Eider is scarce during the winter buf is found almost annually in firths, bays and marshes on the Cantabrian and Catalan-Valencian coasts. Between the years 7 975 and 1995, 5 15 individuals were recorded, with maxima during the winter months. Altogether 49 individuals were recorded moulting and staying during the summer on the coasts of the lberian Peninsula. Here, more than half of the individuals were recorded during winter 7 988- 7989 on Mediterranean coasts, after an irruption of young birds of first year that crossed Europe from the south of the Baltic Sea. Their behaviour was very gregarious, and most records were of birds in first-year plumage.
