Location based networks: the significance of localized information in the mobile communication society

  • Smart phones and other mobile internet devices make communication increasingly independent from the communicator's concrete location. Thereby, the question appears in what way the unquestionable mobilization of communication- and reception processes really cause decreasing significance of place and space in communication acts. However even a contrary effect is imaginable, namely the trend of a rediscovery of place, ie. that location based information gain significance because of the mobile usage, because the people like to get information to the places where they communicate with their mobile devices.

    These - at the first sight contradictory - trends can be found in scientific approaches too: On the one hand exist studies that show a decreasing significance of the place as in the communication and information process (Virilio 1996, Wellman 2002). On the other hand the contra-position mentions a "rediscovery of the place" (Pieper 1987) or the "spatial turn" (Backmann-Medick 2006, Doring/Thielmann 2008).

    In this paper I would like to describe the two research positions in a short over view, before I will try to combine these - at the first sight contradictory - research positions. In the empirical part of this paper findings of in-depth interviews with members of location based networks will show how the mobilization of the communication process can go along with a localization of the communication contents.
