The ideology of first Catalan Free Thought movement (1868-1874) was absolutely conditioned by the positivism. Palá maintains that positivism produced an almost absolute hegemony of atheism and materialism that found justification in a materialistic interpretation of Darwinism which was also influenced by German monist philosophy. Although this ideology achieved to unite little groups by means of his frontal opposition to Catholicism, it also made difficult the development of a socially wider and ideologically more plural movement.
