This communication discusses the actions for the conservation of historical memory of Castro city, located in Parana state, that was one of the first Brazilian regions those implemented policies and measures to preserve the cultural heritage. The first actions taken in order to preserve the heritage took into account the value of the material wealth and it has been considered the legacy from tropeiros, men that were used to do the cattle transportation from the south to the southeast of Brazil in the 18th century.Castro, in time of portuguese colony, was part of the development plan from Marquis of Pombal, who was the representative of portuguese state between 1750-1777. That plan was based on founding towns and villages in order to reinforce the economy and territory protection. Castro shows in his architecture all the sophistication and urban order based on the Law of the Indies, written from the Renaissance ideals. The current Museum of Tropeiro building was the first declared heritage landmark, in 1978, and its architecture reflects how the architectural culture was applied to the colonial Brazil. Nowadays, the city is under heritage declaration process.
