An historical account on speleological investigations carried out in the farnous touristic site of Coves del Drac (Manacor, Mallorca island) is presented in this paper. At the same time, an overview of speleo-genetical theories proposed for this cave since 1896 is developed.
Nevertheless, the main aim of this paper is focused in establishing a genetic model fer this irnportant cave, that can be extrapolated to karstification in post-orogenical Upper Miocene limestones from the south-east area of Mallorca. In regard to this, we propose a speleo-genetical model based on the existence of a network of hollows and conduits of phreatic origin, excavated by solution in the coastal mixing zone between fresh and sea water. These ancient voids were later affected by extensive collapse and breakdown processes, that contributed to volumetric growth of the cavern. Finally, important speleothems deposition phenornena complete the morphological frame of the locality, gifting to this cavern a spectacular beauty;
among the speleotherns that are present in the cave, it is necessary to mention phreatic crystallizations related to paleolevels of the Mediterranean sea during Upper Pleistocene.
Es presenten en aquest treball uns apunts historics sobre les exploracions i investigacions espeleologiques efectuades a les Coves del Drac, famosa cova turística del terme municipal de Manacor (Mallorca), aprofitant I'avinentesa per passar revista a les diverses teories espeleogenetiques que han estat proposades per explicar la formació d'aquest important aparell endocarstic.
No obstant, el principal objectiu de la present nota se centra en establir un model genetic valid per a aquesta cova, que sigui extensiu a la carstificació del Migjorn de Mallorca. En aquest sentit es proposa, per a les Coves del Drac, un esquema genetic fonamentat en I'existencia d'una xarxa de buits i conductes freatics, generats per dissolució a la zona costanera de mescla d'aigua dolca i aigua marina; la qual s'ha vist desarticulada per processos generalitzats de caigudes de blocs i reaiustaments mecanics de les voltes de la cova. Una important estalagmititzició, que inclou la presència d'espeleotemes freitics relacionats amb palioniveIls pleistocenics de la Mediterrania, completa el panorama morfologic de la cavitat conferintli una espectacular bellesa.
