  • Resumen
    • In the middle of the XVII century, a scandalous case outraged the whole population of Madrid: the court alcalde don Martín Bautista de Lanuza, senior official of the judicial power and representative of the royal power, was accused of having committed several serious offences: the image of justice was defied. If it was necessary at first to restore this image by giving an exemplary judgment, the question arose as to whether certain favours had been granted to the accused. The silence about this affair is also a problem: is it a deliberate way to misinform people? Nevertheless, the impact of this case of corruption went far beyond Madrid. Moreover, this affair raises another problem: what has historiography been willing to learn and remember from this crime case?
