    Barcelona, la cuarta ciudad más visitada en Europa, tiene una historia larga de maravillas arquitectónicas. Muchos/as turistas han sido atraídos/as a la ciudad por su proximidad al mar Mediterráneo mientras otros tratan de aprender más sobre la cultura catalana en las giras especializadas. Las obras literarias basadas en la ciudad (como La catedral del mar, La plaça del diamant, La sombra del viento y La ciudad de los prodigios) han creado interés en Barcelona como ciudad y en la historia que se encuentra en ellas. El desarrollo de la ciudad, y su efecto en la historia, son evidentes en las novelas y en las giras que florecieron en la última década. Estas obras se enfocan en diferentes épocas y áreas de Barcelona. Barcelona se considera una de las más ricas y diversas ciudades en términos arquitectónicos. Los contrastes entre el Born, Eixample, Gràcia y Port Olimpic atraen a muchos/as turistas.

    Barcelona, como destinación turística, tiene mucho que ofrecer: las ruinas romanas, el centro medieval, las iglesias, la arquitectura modernista, las empresas y los sitios culturales. Los tradición, música, arte, literatura, y una visión hacia el futuro, son sus inspiraciones. Los/las turistas pueden encontrarlo todo en esta ciudad vibrante.

    Barcelona tiene un promedio de siete millones de visitantes por año; la mitad en viajes de ocio. En esta presentación, nos concentramos en dos tipos de turismo: 1) las giras literarias que siguen los pasos de una novela y 2) las giras arquitectónicas.

    Vamos a enfocarnos en los/las turistas que gozan de la historia y belleza de una ciudad llena de cultura y nacionalismo.

    Barcelona, the fourth most visited city in Europe, has a long history of architectural wonders. Many tourists have been attracted to the city because of its proximity to the sea while others strive to learn more about the Catalan culture through the walking (or biking) tours specifically developed to fill this niche. Literary works based on the city (such as La catedral del mar, La plaça del diamant, La sombra del viento and La ciudad de los prodigios) have created interest both in Barcelona as a city, and in the history recounted in them. The growth of the city, and its effect on history, are evident in the novels and in the tours that have flourished in the last decade. These works focus on different time periods and areas of Barcelona. Barcelona is considered one of the richest architecturally diverse cities. The contrasts between the Born, Eixample, Gràcia and Port Olimpic have attracted many to the city. Barcelona as a tourist destination has much to offer: the Roman ruins, medieval center, churches, Modernist architecture, business facilities and cultural sites. Tradition, music, art, literature, and a vision towards the future, are its inspirations. Tourists will find everything in this vibrant city. Barcelona averages over 7 million visitors a year; about half of these are leisure travelers. In this presentation, we will concentrate on two types of tourism: 1) literary tours that follow in the steps of a novel; and 2) architectural tours. Our paper will focus on the tourists who appreciate a historical and nationalistic city steeped in culture and whose roots are firmly set in the Mediterranean that bathes its shores. The people who settled here left their imprint on a city that tourists can enjoy.
