El tratamiento fibrinolítico ha mejorado significativamente el pronóstico de los pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio. Pero esta estrategia terapéutica tiene limitaciones importantes como son: la escasa utilización, no conseguir óptima reperfusión en todos los pacientes y las complicaciones sobre todo hemorrágicas que en ocasiones pueden ser graves Se están investigando fármacos que eviten o disminuyan estos problemas, que actúen más rápidamente, sean más fáciles de administrar, lo que facilitaría el uso prehospitalario, y que tengan más capacidad lítica y menores complicaciones hemorrágicas
