    In 1908, the noblewoman Maria Carolina Luigia (“Gina”) Sobrero, known in the literature circles of the late nineteenth century under the alias of Mantea, publishes the diary “Espatriata. Da Torino a Honolulu” (from roman editor Voghera). This diary, written two decades after the facts narrated, is among the the most interesting and adventurous of Gina Sobrero and was made following the journey from Tourin to Honolulu (through France, England, Ireland and the United States) and to the sad hawaiian journey. This article focuses on the piece Espatria, with the aim of hihglighting the difficulties and sufferings of the writer and her need to not conform to the relating discourse to female identity and to the role of the woman as wife and mother. Gina will stand out from her contemporaries: she lives a forced marriage and a crisis linked to unwanted motherhood, emotions and disappoinments explained in detail on this autobiography.

    (“Gina”) Sobrero, nota negli ambienti letterari di fine Ottocento con lo pseudonimo di Mantea, pubblica il diario Espatriata. Da Torino a Honolulu (dall’editore romano Voghera). Questo diario, scritto due decenni dopo i fatti narrati, è tra i più interessanti e avventurosi di Gina Sobrero e nasce appunto in seguito al lungo viaggio da Torino a Honolulu (attraverso Francia, Inghilterra, Irlanda e Stati Uniti) e al triste soggiorno hawaiano. Quest’articolo si focalizza appunto sul libro Espatriata, con l’intento di mettere in luce le difficoltà e le sofferenze della scrittrice e la necessità di non conformarsi al discorso relativo all’identità femminile e alla funzione della donna come moglie e madre. Gina si distinguerà dalle sue contemporanee: vive un matrimonio imposto e una crisi legata a una maternità non desiderata, emozioni e delusioni spiegate dettagliatamente in quest’autobiografía
