    Este artículo trata del alfabeto rúnico, la escritura indígena de los pueblos germánicos, atestiguada desde el siglo ii d. C. hasta la Edad Media. Se discute el origen y la aplicación de las runas, así como la propagación de estas en el norte, este y oeste de Europa. Las runas finalmente cayeron en desuso, pero nunca fueron olvidadas por completo. El renacimiento resultó en un renovado interés por parte de la comunidad científica.

    This paper deals with the runic alphabet, the indigenous script of Germanic people, attested from the 2nd century AD onwards to the Middlem Ages. Origin and application of the runes are discussed, as well as the spread of the runes throughout northern, eastern and western Europe. Runes eventually fell into disuse but were never completely forgotten. The renaissance resulted in renewed interest from the scientific side. The history of runologym is therefore treated in brief.
