In this paper, the author collects and reviews some pieces of evidence about the legendary origins of musical instruments, as shown by Greek myths related to Apollo, Hermes, Dionysus, Pan and Athena. The sources are those of Greek and Latin literature; further iconographical sources are occasionally alluded to. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between those gods and the music in the context of the myths of which they are the protagonists, as well as to offer a sketch of structural analysis of the whole of these legends.
