    El presente artículo se propone abordar las cuestiones bioéticas y biopolíticas que se desprenden del análisis de la serie televisiva El cuento de la criada (2017), la cual hace eco de la característica distintiva del sistema patriarcal respecto de la concepción de la mujer: el mandato social de la maternidad. Frente a un cine dimisionario en cuanto a las cuestiones de género, este tipo de ficción dibuja un nuevo panorama en el que plantearse estas temáticas vuelve a ser pertinente, aportando una lectura novedosa a partir de la narrativa bioética. Este material permite analizar el proceso de la gestación desde aspectos singulares de la trama que son importantes destacar: de acuerdo a las políticas del régimen totalitario imperante, las mujeres fértiles deben convertirse en gestantes. En este sentido, enfatizamos el término “gestante”, ya que las criadas no son consideradas madres de esos niños/as por nacer, ni se espera de ellas su posterior crianza. A partir del abordaje de las singularidades situacionales que se desprenden del relato es posible realizar un análisis que difiere de una intención generalizante, para poder así centrarnos en el caso por caso y contemplar la complejidad que la cuestión reviste.

    This article aims to address bioethical and biopolitical issues that arise from the analysis of the TV series The Handmaid’s Tale (2017), that clearly shows the distinctive characteristics of the patriarchal system regarding the concept of femininity: the social mandate of maternity. Given that films haven’t taken a stand in gender matters, this kind of fiction opens a new outlook in which discussing about these topics is important, as it provides a different way of looking through bioethical narrative. This material allows us to analyze the gestation process from singular aspects of the plot: according to the policy of the current totalitarian regime, fertile women must become surrogate mothers. We emphazise the paradox of the term “surrogate mother”, taking into account that the handmaids aren’t considered the mothers of the children they give birth to, and they are not expected to take care of them as they grow up. The analysis of situational singularities that can be extracted from this story enables us to focus on this particular case, without trying to generalize, and consider the complexity of this issue.
