Cordoba, España
Surveys were conducted to 161 beef farmers in the area of the Cooperativa Andaluza Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (Córdoba, Badajoz and Ciudad Real), with the aim to know production systems characteristics. Average age of farmers is high (55) and 40% are not full-time farmers. 46% are family farmers using exclusively familiar labor. The average herd size is 76 animals (62 cows), although there are some differences among regions. 80% of farmers are thinking to maintain or increase herd size. Racial diversity is high: 62% of cows are crossbreed of Limousin and Charolais x local breeds, while 97% of bulls are purebred. Farmers have an average of 300 ha, where they produce beef cattle and other livestock species, mainly Iberian pig and sheep. Average stocking rate is 0,52 UGM per ha. 38% of farmers prevent calving in summer by separating cows and bulls several months. In most cases, they do not use pregnancy diagnosis or artificial insemination. Farms state they produce an average of 0,8 calves per cow per year, although these data are probably over-estimated.
