    • A total of 1,540 pigs were used in 3 experiments to study an individual traceability system based on electronic ear tags (3 types of full-duplex and half-duplex transponders) and genotyping (ear and carcass samples). Results of overall traceability, from farm to carcass, varied between 52.8 and 97.7%, with marked differences by ear tag type and experimental conditions. Auditing by microsatellites showed 83.3 to 98.2% ear and meat sample matching. In conclusion, the use of well designed half-duplex ear tags allowed obtaining >93% traceability, from farm to carcass and under commercial conditions, in the pig chain. Use of microsatellites allowed 95% confirmation of meat identity.
