    In Portugal, in the fourteenth century, the armorials became one of the instruments by which the Crown, via the heralds, tried to establish its exclusive authority on heraldic matters. Heraldry conveyed the image of a particular social and political order. The arms of noble families, collected in armorials by royal officers, demonstrated the position that the Crown recognized them. The municipal arms, borne by municipalities with no interference of the Crown, bypassed this process. They challenged both the common association between heraldry and nobility, and the authority of the heralds. It was, therefore, pointless that such emblems appear in those armorials.

    Cet article propose une vision d’ensemble de l’origine et des caractéristiques des premiers armoriaux portugais, qu’ils soient documentaires ou monumentaux, entre les XIVe et XVIe siècles. En étant attentif à la teneur et aux circonstances de production de ces œuvres, on cherche à expliquer les causes sociales et politiques de l’absence d’héraldique municipale. Enfin, on analyse l’apparition des armoriaux municipaux, à partir de la compilation de Brás Pereira Brandão datant du XVIe siècle, qui met en place un modèle de présentation et de réflexion autour de la thématique des insignes municipales.

    O presente artigo traça uma visão panorâmica da origem e características dos primeiros armoriais portugueses, quer documentais quer monumentais, existentes entre os séculos XIV e XVI. Verificando a ausência da heráldica municipal, e atendendo ao teor e às circunstâncias de produção de tais obras, procura-se explicar as causas sociais e políticas de tal exclusão. Por fim, analisa-se o aparecimento das armas municipais no armorial compilado em meados do século XVI por Brás Pereira Brandão, que estabelece um determinado modelo de apresentação e de reflexão sobre a temática das insígnias autárquicas.
