    Del Rey abajo, ninguno es un drama de honor conyugal de ambientación campesina, con dos peculiaridades: en primer lugar, el protagonista se presenta como un villano rico, pero en realidad pertenece a un linaje noble; en segundo lugar, el caso de honor al que dicho protagonista debe enfrentarse está condicionado por el equívoco que le hace creer que el promotor de la ofensa es el propio rey. Ahora bien, por detrás de estos aspectos que ocupan el primer plano de la representación, se plantea y desarrolla una intriga de naturaleza estrictamente política, que permite explicar el argumento en su conjunto como la historia de la rehabilitación de dos familias aristocráticas y su reintegración a la gracia real. La planificación y el éxito de este proceso se debe a los buenos oficios del conde de Orgaz, valido del rey retratado como aristócrata y estadista ejemplar, quizá para desmentir ciertas acusaciones formuladas contra la familia en los años previos al estreno de la comedia.

    The play Del Rey abajo, ninguno combines two well-known Spanish Golden Age theater features: the marital honor conflict and the countryside location. In addition, it presents two original traits: first, the protagonist is not the rich peasant he seems to be, but of noble descendant; second, as a result of a quid pro quo, he thinks the offender is the king himself. However, another conflict is developed behind the plot in the foreground: a story about the fall and restoration of two aristocratic families. The person who secretly protects both families and plans their reconciliation with the monarch is the Count of Orgaz, the king’s right hand and, at the same time, a wise and loyal statesman who works in favor of the unity and promotes the Reconquest. Maybe, the vindication of this figure is linked with the moriscos issue at the time the play was first performed and with the fact that, after the expulsion, some intransigent publicists accused the Orgaz lineage of connivance with them.
