    Los santuarios de carácter regional y panhélenico jugaron un papel esencial en la creación y manifestación de la identidad griega. Las anfictionías y consejos que se formaron en algunos de ellos fueron la piedra angular de las relaciones establecidas entre las distintas comunidades representadas en ellas. En estos santuarios, la religión contribuía a la construcción identitaria a través de la acción cultual y de unos sentimientos compartidos que traspasaron el ámbito religioso para convertirse en parte de la mentalidad individual y comunitaria de los helenos.

    Regional and Panhelenic sanctuaries played an essential role in the creation and manifestation of Greek identity, and the amphictyonies and councils that were formed in some of them were the cornerstone of the established relations among the different communities represented in them. In these sanctuaries, religion contributed to the construction of identity through cultural action and shared feelings that transcended the religious sphere to become part of the individual and community mentality of the Hellenes.
