    El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar las políticas y prácticas de violencia, conquista y ocupación desplegadas por el ejército sublevado en el espacio del frente durante la Guerra Civil española, relacionándolas con los objetivos y necesidades político-militares del bando rebelde. Analizando directivas de conducta y ocupación circuladas durante toda la guerra y testimonios de combatientes, se planteará primeramente el concepto de «necesidad militar» como una herramienta clave para entender los altos niveles de violencia implementados por las columnas durante el verano-otoño de 1936. En segundo lugar, se analizará cómo la evolución del conflicto en una guerra formal de signo progresivamente favorable a los insurgentes transformó el modo en el que se empleó la violencia en el frente. Y en tercero, se abordará el desarrollo de estos procesos en las praxis de los combatientes. En última instancia, mi propósito es subrayar la necesidad de incorporar el espacio del frente y sus dinámicas a la ecuación explicativa de la violencia y la represión franquistas.

    This article examines the politics and practices of violence, conquest, and occupation deployed by the rebel army during the Spanish Civil War in connection with the political-military goals and needs of the insurgents. First, by analysing the occupation and conduct directives issued during the war, as well as soldiers’ testimonies, I contend that the concept of “military necessity” is a key instrument to understanding the high levels of violence inflicted by the columns during the summer and autumn of 1936. The second part of my thesis examines how the emergence of a formal war and its progressive inclination towards the insurgents changed the way violence was applied at the front. Lastly, I will discuss these processes in the context of soldiers’ practices. My goal is to emphasize the importance of including the front and its dynamics within the explanation of Francoist violence and repression.
