The film Black Orpheus is a landmark in Portuguese spoken cinematographic production, regardless of not beingrecognized in this way in Portuguese language countries. Besides winning the Golden Palm at Cannes, the Oscarand Golden Globe of best foreign language film in 1959, the film was a success of audience and critique all aroundthe world and is venerated until these days.However, the film has a weak receptivity in the country where the story happens. Very few people know about it orhave seen the film. Since Cannes Award, when it was enthusiastically saluted, it suffered in Brazil an increasingdisdain, and it was quickly forgotten. The most common review is that the film stereotyped the Brazilian, that itshowed a folkloric Brazil, distorting reality by presenting people dancing all the time, during carnival. The Greektragedy, adapted to present days, happens during Carnival.The most favorable reviews around the world are for its photography, the colorful scenes, the sensuality ofperformance and costumes, and the music. This article aims to recover the production memory from Black Orpheusand discusses these questions.
