Computational Thinking and Statistical Literacy in the First Grade of Primary School: An Exploratory Teaching Practice

    Computational thinking (CT) is an essential skill for integration into society, and its development from the earliest years of schooling is crucial. This study presents the implementation of an exploratory teaching practice that sought to develop this mathematical ability through the theme of Data and Probabilities, in the first year of primary school, with a focus on statistical literacy within the context of World Water Day. In this way, the exploratory teaching practice was developed in four phases, collaboratively between three trainee teachers, supervised by the head teacher, and a statistical investigation was carried out with the students. In this context, the students, in groups of two and three, collected and interpreted data, built a graphical representation and, finally, shared the tasks carried out with their colleagues. The session included data collection through audio recordings, photographs, the student’s written work and the trainee teachers’ field notes, and the anonymity of the participants involved was guaranteed.

    The practice showed the development of the Abstraction, Decomposition, Algorithm, Pattern Recognition and Debugging dimensions of CT. Through the interactions between the students, it was also possible to observe that the practice promoted a collaborative learning environment.

    It can be concluded that the exploratory teaching practice not only promoted the development of CT and statistical literacy but also encouraged critical thinking, collaboration and mutual help among the students, highlighting the importance of developing this type of practice from the beginning of school.

    O Pensamento Computacional (PC) é uma capacidade essencial para a integração na sociedade, sendo fulcral o seu desenvolvimento desde os primeiros anos de escolaridade. Este estudo apresenta a implementação de uma Prática de Ensino Exploratório (PEE) que procurou desenvolver esta capacidade matemática através do tema Dados e Probabilidades, numa turma do 1.º ano do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, com foco na literacia estatística dentro do contexto do Dia Mundial da Água. Deste modo, a PEE desenvolveu-se em quatro fases, de forma colaborativa entre três professoras estagiárias, com supervisão do professor titular de turma, tendo-se realizado uma investigação estatística com os alunos. Neste contexto, os alunos, em grupos de dois e três elementos, recolheram e interpretaram dados, construíram uma representação gráfica e, por fim, partilharam as tarefas realizadas com os colegas. A sessão incluiu a recolha de dados através de gravações de áudio, fotografias, trabalhos escritos dos alunos e notas de campo dos professores estagiários, tendo sido garantido o anonimato dos participantes envolvidos.

    Com a prática desenvolvida evidenciou-se o desenvolvimento das dimensões Abstração, Decomposição, Algoritmia, Reconhecimento de padrões e Depuração do PC. Através das interações ocorridas entre os alunos foi ainda possível observar que a prática promoveu um ambiente de aprendizagem colaborativo.

    Conclui-se que a PEE não promoveu apenas o desenvolvimento do PC e da literacia estatística, mas também incentivou o pensamento crítico, a colaboração e a entreajuda entre os alunos, evidenciando-se a importância do desenvolvimento deste tipo de práticas desde o início da escolaridade.
