Currently, professionals are greatly concerned about the increasing psychological problems among children in Residential Care (RC). The main objective is to assess the psychological adjustment of 759 adolescents from the province of Cádiz currently in residential care. Specifically, the objectives are to: a) determine if children and adolescents in RC exhibit emotional and behavioural problems differently than their peers; b) study their self-perceptions (self-esteem and life satisfaction). SDQ scores were compared between children in RC and their peers. Children in RC had higher scores in hyperactivity, emotional, and conduct problems, and the prosocial scale. Significant differences were found in peer problems and total score. Girls in RC have more emotional problems than their peers, and boys in RC have more conduct problems. Children in RC scored lower in self-esteem and life satisfaction than their peers. Unaccompanied foreign minors have more conduct problems than others.
