Resumen de La Oratio in funere Pii V de Muret: significado y fortuna de un discurso funerario neolatino

  Siguiendo un método histórico-filológico nos proponemos analizar en profundidad el discurso que el humanista Marc Antoine Muret compuso y pronunció en las exequias del papa Pío V (1572) ante el colegio cardenalicio. En nuestro análisis atenderemos no solo a los aspectos internos de la oratio (estructura retórica, topica, fuentes, etc.) sino al marco sociopolítico en el que se pronuncia. Como trataremos de demostrar en este trabajo, el mencionado discurso constituye un hito importante en su carrera como orador y pronto deviene un modelo de laudatio funebris en la oratoria epidíctica neolatina practicada en la corte papal. Dentro de este contexto particular intentaremos valorar el significado e importancia de este discurso, así como el impacto e influencia que tuvo en la literatura propagandística de la Roma post-tridentina.

  Using a historical and philological method, we shall analyze the speech that the humanist Marc Antoine Muret composed and delivered at the funeral of Pope Pius V (1572) before the College of Cardinals. In our analysis we will pay attention not only to the internal aspects of the oratio (rhetorical structure, topica, sources, etc.) but also to the socio-political framework in which it was delivered. As we will try to demonstrate in this paper, the aforementioned speech constitutes an important milestone in his career as an orator and soon becomes a model of laudatio funebris in the Neo-Latin epidictic oratory practised at the papal court. Within this particular context we will attempt to assess the significance and relevance of this speech, as well as the impact and influence it had on the propagandistic literature from post-Tridentine Rome.
