  • Resumen
    • After a preliminary analysis of the spiritual, social and economic values of pilgrimage and religious tourism, this chapter seeks to identify a potential list of simple and aggregate environmental indicators for estimating the impact of religious tourism. This preliminary assessment derives from the analysis of two case studies: one from Italy and one from India. This analysis makes it possible to compare the impact of religious tourism in areas that are already strongly affected by human activities and development, and in protected areas and/or fragile ecosystems where this driver induces a loss of biodiversity. The chapter applies the cause-effect principle to perform a Driver Pressure Impact (DPI) analysis in terms of human-biosphere interaction.
